Graduate Programs in Pharmaceutical
Chemistry |
Pharmaceutical chemistry is a multidisciplinary field
that applies chemical principles to investigations of
biologically-active substances that include
therapeutically useful drugs. The Department is
responsible for general instruction in synthetic organic
chemistry (design, synthesis, structure determination,
biological activity-mechanism and biological
activity-structure relationships) for graduate students,
and for laboratory practice on advanced high grade
synthetic organic chemistry.
The curriculum
consists of two general components: core courses and elective
courses. All graduate students, doctoral and masters students
alike, are required to take core courses that include certain
offerings in pharmaceutical chemistry, drug design, advanced
organic chemistry and laboratory safety. Graduate students are
also required to present non-thesis seminar(s). Depending upon
their interests, students select from a variety of elective
courses for their future research or career goals. Graduate
students begin their research at the end of first year, and are
encouraged to present the results of the research, in oral and
poster format, at various local, state, and other scientific
meetings. Graduate students (research assistant) also
participate in undergraduate laboratory practise to enhance
their teaching proficiency and presentation technique. A student, depending upon the nature of their research,
should be able to complete all degree requirements in less than
two years for a masters degree or within about four years for a
doctoral degree.

elsewhere in the city. Monthly rents for a decent
appartment are around US$ 200-400 plus heating,
electricity and water. Food and transportation are
